Jake from Common Thief

January 2, 2018

What's good everybody?! As it's the last day of the year, I would like to say thank you to everybody for following my blog and reading my interviews - this his definitely one of the coolest things I accomplished this year. To kick of 2018, I decided to interview Jake Langley from Common Thief as they are one of my favorite bands and definitely cool people. Read below to see what's up.

What are all of your guy's names and what do you do in the band?

Jake: We are collective, but much like a gang, we don't allow anyone to quit, so to name everyone would be daunting. Here are the key players: Dillon Vuksanovich  - RIP. Dillon, he died from a heroin overdose, Kaegan Ryan - current vocals, Nathan Bobb - bass, Jake Langley - guitar, Shawn Dearmitt - guitar, Chris Curran - guitar, Pete Long - drums.

I have to ask about Breaking and Entering. What inspired everything for that EP?

Jake: I wrote the lyrics for the entire EP. Each song is a little different but the main overall story is about our original singer,  my best friend Dillon Vuksanovich who was battling a drug addiction. He was addicted to heroine but had taken almost every drug known to man. He and I had a close relationship and he was very open with me so I wrote these songs for him from his perspective. It's a lot of self-depreciating honesty, he felt like a piece of shit for his addiction he was trying to flaunt it. He was trying to get clean. He wanted other people to hear his story and stay clean or never ever try that shit to begin with. BREAKING cause he was literally breaking apart everyday. ENTERING cause that's how he used to get drug money - he'd steal.

Wow, that's heavy stuff - thank you for sharing that with us. Do you guys work with a producer or is everything DIY?

Jake: Chris Curran produced B&E, but he is also I our band, so, GANG.

Gang Gang! So where are you guys and how's the local scene?

Jake: Central PA. It's a hotbed right now with DIY bands. It's a [good] place to live too because it's easy to travel to play shows in other neighboring areas.

Solid. If Common Thief was a food, what food would it be?

Jake: Chimichangas

In your opinion, what is the most difficult and what is your favorite part about being in a band?

Jake: The road. Being away from home is a double edged sword. I know its the most cliché answer, but traveling full time changes everything. It changed me right down to my core. I was straight edge and a devout Christian. I am neither of those things now. It opens your eyes in some good and in some bad ways. If you're not careful, it can chew your eyes out and spit them into your face. The demons on the road seem to lurk around every bend.

If someone had never head of Common Thief, what song would you tell them to listen to?

Jake: Addiction

What is something you wish had known before starting a band?

Jake: I wish someone had told me how easy it is to just do it without the need for the right manager or label. It's really simple to book tours, it's tedious and annoying at first, and every band is different but I wish someone had explained to me that all I needed was to just beat the street and not worry about the "industry" side of things so much.

What is your most solid piece of advice for new musicians?

Jake: DO NOT STOP. Don't be afraid to ask for help along the way.

What does the future hold for Common Thief? Anything we should be excited about?

Jake: We are writing and recording an LP. We also have a brand new single dropping soon grating Mike Herrera of  MXPX on guest vocals.

Sick! Well, thank you again for doing this with me, hope we can talk again in the future!
