Stoner - Thieves & Lovers:

Thieves and Lovers is a unique alternative rock band originaly from L.A, however, in the summer of 2015, the band made a move to Pittsburg, PA become a full time project. Over the years, the band has used their influences Jimmy Eat World, The Gaslight Anthem, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Replacements, and Foo Fighters to piece together well made songs full vocal melodies and tight guitar parts.

What is your name and what do you do in Thieves & Lovers?

Stoner: Name is Stoner and I am guitar/vox in the band. Thanks very much for this

opportunity!

What are three words to describe Thieves & Lovers?

Stoner: Never. Give. Up. Seriously, we have seen enough turnarounds, back stepping, false starts, and heartbreak

that most bands would have given in by now. Two traits you absolutely have to have in

the music business are a never ending hunger to move forward and really thick skin.

How was the recording handled for the new record - The World Is Sleeping?

Stoner:It was a long process. We started the record last fall with drum tracking, which went

down in a cool little studio just outside of Pittsburgh. I was working at a studio outside

of Baltimore where I finished the rest of the tracking. It was really nice to finally be able

to take the time to experiment with tones and ideas and not have to really worry about

time or budget constraints.

For the mixing we went with the engineer that mixed the first, self-titled EP, Scott

Goodrich out of Nu-Tone Studios in San Francisco. He’s a great mixer and an all around

awesome person to work with.

What, in your opinion, is the song on the record that helps define Thieves & Lovers?

Stoner: I would probably say “Always Winter”. It’s definitely a new direction for us and more

reflective of where our sound is going. It came together really quickly too – first in the

arrangement and then the recording.

From where do you find inspiration for songwriting?

Stoner: It can really come from anywhere, you just have to be open to it. One thing I’ve

learned over years of songwriting is that what’s good isn’t forced, and what’s

forced isn’t good. A song has to come together naturally.

Growing up, what was your favorite band and how have they changed / influenced

you?

Stoner: I grew up on classic rock and pop punk, and some of my favorite bands when I was

younger are still my favorites to this day – Van Halen, Blink-182, Foo Fighters, Led

Zeppelin.

There was a totally rad radio station in my hometown that would play everything –

modern radio rock, classic rock, alternative, thrash metal, you name it. It was an

awesome variety and that helped me discover so many different types of artists. You’d

hear the new Green Day song, then a Metallica song, the Goo Goo Dolls and then

“Eruption” by Van Halen. I got to discover decades’ worth of music just by tuning in to

that station.

What is the best and worst part about touring?

Stoner: My favorite part of touring is getting to meet new people and hearing their stories and

what connects them to the songs. My least favorite part would probably be being away

from friends and family. It’s a fun job, but it’s still a job.

What is the one piece of gear you absolutely cannot live without?

Stoner: That would definitely have to be my Fender Custom Shop Hardtail Strats! They’re really

versatile guitars. I swap pickups out and mess with the wiring all the time to try out new

sounds.

What does the rest of 2018 hold for Thieves & Lovers?

Stoner: I just moved back to the Baltimore area, so things are a bit hectic. We are finalizing the

album for release on Spotify, Google Play, iTunes and everything (it’s available now on

Bandcamp). We also just launched a campaign to promote the new single “Underneath”

to college and independent radio stations.

Hopefully going to be filling out the calendar for live dates throughout the fall and

winter as well. Very excited to get back out there and play live!
